Basically, it means being (intentionally) more aware and awake at every moment and fully participating in what is happening in our environment, with acceptance and without judgment. Along with the more common definition of mindfulness, there are some alternative ways in which you can define mindfulness to help you understand how the practice can make you feel and influence your life. The second part of the definition means that mindfulness professionals must be open to whatever they are facing in the present moment. While it may not have had the staying power that researchers expected, this definition of mindfulness clearly explains the process of practicing mindfulness.
While other self-care activities are self-explanatory, many people don't fully understand the definition of mindfulness. But a close examination of the word “mindfulness” does not reveal a single, universal definition; it is a complex term that names multiple, distinct but interrelated ideas. This definition of mindfulness is an older scientific definition that was popular with experts more than a decade ago. A similar definition comes from psychologist Scott Bishop, who describes mindfulness as an “unelaborated, non-judgmental and present-centered consciousness in which every thought, feeling or sensation that arises arises.
This definition was developed by a group of leading mindfulness researchers who wanted a precise and simple way to describe mindfulness both in the academic world and in the public world. This is the little-quoted definition of Jon Kabat-Zinn, well-known author and founder of the University of Massachusetts Stress Reduction Clinic (who is careful to add that it is an operative definition and omits some aspects of mindfulness).
